It Makes My Liver Quiver

By Dean L. Jones

Eating process sugar usually only raises modest concern, where rarely is it ever associated with being specifically harmful to the human liver organ.  The liver is a vital organ for a wide range of functions, including detoxification of various metabolites, protein synthesis, detoxification and the production of hormones and biochemicals necessary for digestion.

When we consume processed sugar the liver uses one part of sugar, called fructose, to make fat.  Too much processed sugar and high-fructose corn syrup causes a fatty buildup that can lead to liver disease.  This can make eating processed sugar as damaging to the liver as excessively drinking alcohol.

A number of foodstuffs that adds processed sugar use saturated fats and extra fat can build up in the liver cells and lead to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease; as a result the liver may swell.  Prolonged consumption of bad foodstuff can lead to hardening and scaring liver tissue, called by the medical community as cirrhosis.

Where there is processed sugar in packaged foodstuff there may be another man-made trouble maker known as Trans fats.  The label of ingredients usually says partially hydrogenated ingredients, and Trans fats will increase weight.  Even if the label says “0” grams of Trans fat, it may still have a small amount, and that adds up.

Even when the foodstuff labels of ingredients display the word “natural,” it may not be okay for good health.  For instance, it is confirmed that some women have elected to take an herb called kava kava for menopause symptoms or to help them relax.  But studies show that it can keep the liver organ from functioning correctly, which can lead to hepatitis and liver failure.  There are countries that have banned or restricted this particular herb, but it is still available in the USA.

Similarly, although our bodies require vitamin A, it is best to get it from plants such as fresh fruits and vegetables, especially those that are red, orange, and yellow.  When attempting to get vitamin A from eating supplements it can be a serious problem for our liver to metabolize the supplement.  Likewise, over-the-counter and prescription drugs containing acetaminophen can also harm the liver.

Processed sugar is a grave supplier to obesity, heart disease, some cancers, and type 2 diabetes, all of which is reaching epidemic proportions, now afflicting people around the world in excess of 300 million sufferers.  Type 2 diabetes is a disease that is a common cause of early death, blindness, amputation and a severely decreased quality of life.
